Lessons from a Shepherd Boy

Share Article

This past week I have been reading in I Samuel about the life of an ordinary boy named David. David was just an ordinary teen guy who worked for his dad by tending sheep. (Sounds exciting, right?) God saw this ordinary kid and used him for the extraordinary. He used David to slay a giant and save his people from destruction. He later crowned David king of Israel. God works through everyday people like you and me. We don’t need to be the Queen of some far-off country or the most popular celebrity to be used by God. He wants to use us right now, just as we are. That is so incredible! God uses my ordinary day to make an extraordinary difference for His glory. Talk about influence. There are so many examples of people that God used…ordinary, everyday people. Just look at the lives of the Bible heroines Esther, Mary, and Deborah. God used a Jewish girl who was an orphan to be the Queen of Persia and to save the lives of the Jewish people! God sent His very Son into the world through a virgin named Mary. God showed His strength through Deborah on the battlefield as she led her people to victory. God can use you. The only thing He is looking for is a willing heart. God will never leave you hanging–when He uses you, He equips you for the job. Moses didn’t feel adequate enough to help free the Hebrews from the Egyptians because he had a speech impediment, but God spoke through him. David was a scrawny kid, but God used him to defeat a giant! God can use you and He will never leave you. It is just a matter of trust!
