Ordinary And Extraordinary All At the Same Time

Share Article

Ordinary– (or-di-nar-y) commonplace, plain, customary, usual, normal

Extraordinary– (ex-traor-di-nar-y) special, beyond what is usual or ordinary, uncommon

Ordinary and extraordinary. Two total opposites. One is common while the other isn’t. Would it even be possible to be ordinary yet extraordinary at the same time?

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31) Whatever we do? So, whatever I do I need to honor God while I do it? Even eating? Yes, even eating. Our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. God doesn’t want to live in a sea of bright orange Cheetos! I think a nice pasture of green veggies and colorful fruit might be a little prettier! But even beyond taking care of your body–I need to honor God when I am hanging out with my friends? Yes. When I am driving? Definitely a yes! OK, so I need to honor God in the everyday, ordinary things that I do? Bingo!

By honoring God in our ordinary things we make them extraordinary! Anything that honors Jesus Christ is definitely not commonplace and according to our verse, everything we do can bring glory to Jesus. Wow, so it is possible to be ordinary yet extraordinary at the same time! Cool!

Want a real life example? OK, so the picture of the flower above was a picture that I took last year as my family was traveling out west. We were in Idaho and had stopped for a pit stop and decided to hike on this rocky mountain. The hill was literally all rocks. It would have been impossible for any vegetation to have grown there. But along the path there was one single flower in the midst of the rocky terrain. It was the only source of color in the midst of gray. The flower was being a extraordinary wonder in the midst of its ordinary surroundings. The little flower just pointed straight towards God’s goodness and greatness! Now that is extraordinary!

This is my senior year of high school. Wow, one more year and then I will never walk the halls of a high school campus as a student ever again. This is mind-blowing to me! But I want to make everything that I do–all of my little, ordinary things– extraordinary. So this is my theme for the class of 2009:

Do the ordinary things extraordinarily!
